A new social media trend is gaining traction with the advent of a trend in drinks dubbed “oatzempic” promising impressive results in weight loss. However, as the excitement grows the hype, a nutritionist warns about the possible risks that come with this new trend.
The name “oatzempic” blends an oats reference (the primary element in the beverage) and a reference to Ozempic which is the popular weight loss medication manufactured by Novo Nordisk. There is no medicinal ingredient in the drink consisting of half a cup of oatmeal rolled in a ball, a cup of water the juice of half an orange and a bit of cinnamon.
Some TikTok users say they’ve lost 40 pounds in just two months because of the drink. One user reported losing seven pounds over the course of 10 days using oatzempic.
A TikTok user claimed that using the oatzempic drink two times a day has helped her shed weight. She also said that in the past she’s struggled losing weight due to her polycystic Ovary syndrome (PCOS) diagnosis — however, drinking the oat-based concoction two times each day has helped.
“I haven’t had the results like the ones I’m experiencing now through the drink” She claims on the video.
Natalie Riediger, an associate professor in the Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba, said the oatzempic trend is a popular food trend she noticed appear, and she believes that these kinds of trends are more likely to “come and fade.”
“For the past, I’m not sure how many years we’ve had an obsession with weight loss. This isn’t a surprise,” she told Global News. “And obviously Ozempic has truly gotten into the consciousness of the general public.”
While acknowledging the health benefits of eating oats, she stressed that it is not just dependent on diet trends for the purpose of achieving weight loss that is sustainable.

Are you the consumption of oatzempic healthy for you?
A steady, small weight loss of one to two pounds every week is much more easy to achieve and healthier in the long run for your heart, than greater reduction, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
This allows the body to adjust to the change and can lower the risk of developing strong cravings and feelings of deprivation that often accompany more rapid weight loss, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health said.
However, people who drink oatzempic claim it helps in losing up to five pounds per week which Riediger said was “concerning.”
Oats are a great source of fiber in addition to B Vitamins, Dr. X pointed out that there is no evidence to suggest that consuming oats daily aids in weight loss. It was also mentioned that the drink is deficient in essential vitamins and minerals needed to replace the food.
“There’s probabilities of individuals losing weight from nearly any kind of diet or food. However, in terms of lasting weight loss, there’s no sufficient evidence to support any particular eating regimen,” Riediger said.
The drink is deficient in essential nutrients.
“I don’t advise anyone to eat any food item since on its own, you won’t get enough of protein” the woman said. “There’s some proteins in oats but it’s not a complete protein. Moreover, (there are) additional minerals and vitamins that you’re not getting (such as) calcium and iron that a lot of Canadians do not get enough of.”
The Canadian food guidelines recommends eating a lot of fruits and vegetables including whole grains and eating protein-rich foods such as beans and legumes as part of an wholesome diet.
A game based on Ozempic
In spite of the name even though it is a drink, the oatzempic drink isn’t a source of Ozempic. Riediger believes it’s trying to capitalize on the weight loss trend and the popularity of Ozempic to gain the attention of social media.
“Ozempic is well-known,” she said.
She believes that this diet fad is an illustration of how Ozempic is directing the attention of people to weight, possibly reverse the strides made by positive body movements.
“There are health risks of eating a diet in general and weight-related concerns like disordered eating, as well as other mental health effects,” she said, she added that it can also cause “fatphobia stigmatizing weight as well as discrimination.”
While acknowledging that eating oats as breakfast is a good option, she also stressed the importance of incorporating a range of nutritious foods that are rich in minerals, vitamins, proteins and fats to one’s daily diet to maintain optimal health.
If you’re considering a weight loss to improve their health she suggested consulting their physician. However, even having weight loss goals in mind, she emphasized the importance of ensuring healthy eating habits and adding regular exercise into one’s daily routine.
