A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure done to block sperm from reaching the semen that is ejaculated from the penis. During the procedure, a tube called the vas deferens is cut or blocked preventing the passage of sperm and in the process preventing pregnancy. After this procedure is done, the body still make sperm but it ends up soaked up by the body. Although theoretically possible, the reversal procedure doesn’t always work. Only consider this procedure if you are certain you don’t want to have any/anymore children. Like any surgical procedure it has its own risks but it’s a low risk procedure, generally safe and effective. You should have this discussion about risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. PSA: This procedure is not effective right away. Do not go dipping without any protection right away. Although no new sperm gets into the semen, there’s still some sperm left in the pipeline that can cause “trouble” and will take some time to clear. Follow up with your doctor to get an all clear(semen analysis), but in the mean time use other forms of birth control. Increased awareness about this topic is important since there has been an uptick in the number of vasectomies with more men hurrying to get this done following the recent decision by the Supreme Court.
