CBD is a subject of much discussion. But mostly concerning adult human use, much less in pets. Pet owners who may not have otherwise had a reason to try CBD for themselves are now presented with a choice if that's a good idea for their pet. But to start, what even is CBD? Is it Marketing? Is it a type of dog treat? Is it a substance? Well, all of the above are true in one form or another. CBD is shortened term for cannabidiol, the very first medicine derived from using cannabinoids that were not THC. That's right, the cannabis plant is involved here. Where you might be familiar with marijuana, the typical cultivation of that is intended for high levels of THC and not much else. Left to its own devices, cannabis plants and hemp don't produce those levels naturally, and the compounds are much more level, meaning you'd find other cannabinoids. CBD is just one of over 100 cannabinoids, all with unique properties. CBD, aside THC is probably the most well known of those cannabinoids, and many people and companies now distill the hemp plant into some form of CBD. The human body, and our pets too, dogs, cats, horses, all of them have something called a cannabinoid receptor, and amazingly enough, are there in part to react in the presence of cannabis or hemp compounds. What are they there for or were for in our evolution, science is still deciding, but that doesn't stop anyone from trying the perfectly legal substance. CBD is not intoxicating, and no one has seen fit to outlaw it. In fact, massive breakthroughs for hemp production came in 2018 with the farming legislation making it officially legal to grow hemp that has less than a .03% THC level. And so a boom began.
