Vitamin D is a frequently discussed topic in medicine, and most of the people I test for vitamin D levels are either insufficient or deficient in vitamin D. There are many reasons for this and it can be complex. Given that I see many very tan sun bathing patients who are low in vitamin D, I know that it’s more than just sun exposure that’s playing a role. It’s dependent on how our bodies absorb and metabolize vitamin D as well. This is supposed to be a reassuring post that sunscreen use will still let you get vitamin D from the sun, but there’s so much more to getting vitamin D then just being out in the sun.
