Adverse effects As a new patient, and especially without me as your doctor, it can pretty challenging navigating your way through medical marijuana – what products to use, what doses to take, how to take it, when to take it, etc. As a result, it can be easy to overdo it and experience some unwanted side effects. What are some of the adverse effects that you would expect to see if you got too high? Euphoria Fatigue Dizziness Cotton mouth Eye redness/dryness Cough Anxiety Nausea Cognitive effects Paranoia Headache Some less-common ones to look out for are: Blurred vision Dysphoria Tachycardia Orthostatic hypotension Ataxia/discoordination Depression Acute psychosis Cannabis hyperemesis The time of onset and the duration of action of these side effects, or in this case, the time it takes for the effects to wear off, are dependent on the strength of THC, as we saw w THC’s biphasic dose response curve, and also, which route was used! Example: Inhalation vs edibles – If you’re smoking or vaping, the onset of side effects will be much quicker than if you were take an edible – this is due to the rapid increase of THC into the blood stream over a very short period of time! Whereas with edibles, these effects aren't going to be felt until much later bc it has to breakdown in the GI tract before being absorbed. With inhalation, the effects last for a shorter duration of time, like a couple hours, if that, whereas with the edibles, you'll be feeling that sucker for much longer. At the end of the day, if you do experience side effects, the good news is, most if not all of these are temporary or self-limited. And rest assured, there is no evidence showing anyone has overdosed on cannabis alone, this is because there aren’t many if any CB1 receptors located in the brainstem that control our respiration. Opioids on the other hand... There are a couple things to do at this point: 1. Lay down and sleep it off - More likely than not, youll feel much better after a nap 2. also, Take some CBD - CBD is great for reducing the unwanted side effects for THC intoxication! CBD is whats called a negative allosteric modulator at the CB1 receptor. Youll need to take atleast equal amounts of CBD to counter for this to work well. 3. chew on some peppercorn! Neill Young told Howard stern that chewing on some peppercorn can help ease the paranoia that comes along w getting too high! I hoped this helped, see ya next time!
