Sexual side effects of an enlarged prostate As men grow older, a natural change in their anatomy is growth of their prostate gland. This change is better known as benign prostatic hyperplasia and for many men, can impact their sex life. Benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH is when a man has an enlarged prostate. Having BPH is common especially in older men. When the prostate enlarges this can irritate or block the bladder. Once a man is diagnosed with BPH, he may discover his sex life has or may change due to four potential reactions: Retrograde ejaculation Men with BPH with bladder issues like urinary frequency will sometimes undergo a surgery which is generally a safe procedure which can help relieve these symptoms but like any medical procedure there is the potential for men to experience a side effect affecting his sex life. Reduced libido Usually surgical procedures for BPH have minimal impact on libido. But if a man’s desire for sex plummets, the likely culprit is the oral medications used for treating the symptoms of BPH such as 5 alpha reductase inhibitors. Reduced overall sexual satisfaction. Frequent nightly trip to the bathroom not only leads to poor sleep but also overall reduced sexual satisfaction. Erectile dysfunction Some men who’ve undergone for treatment of BPH may experience erectile dysfunction. The inability to achieve or maintain an erection will affect only about 5 to 10 percent of men who have the treatment. But that’s a big deal to the 5 to 10 percent of men who will be very unhappy with the halt to their sex life. Can a man live with BPH? Just because a man has BPH, it doesn’t mean he must live with the symptoms for the rest of his life. There are several approaches for coping with BPH, including lifestyle changes, medications, and other treatments such as getting more exercise, dietary changes, and reducing caffeine and alcohol use. Doctors can guide men in deciding which remedies and treatments are best based on their health situations and likelihood of them being successful.
